Savannah & Hilton Head Island

Verëffentlecht: 19.05.2021

Monday 24.05. / Savannah (Georgia) & Hilton Head (South Carolina)

It poured rain during the night and all we can see from the hotel room window is fog. Previously, we could see a high bridge over the Savannah River. The hotel includes breakfast and we are already in the car at 9:00 a.m., heading towards Hilton Head Island, which is north of us on the coast of South Carolina. The island is the largest between New York and Florida and consists of marshlands, pine forests, and a beach stretching almost 20 km. Here, where 22 golf courses have brought international fame to this somewhat sterile area, we see some noble places, many expensive sailboats, and also beautiful beaches.

We drive through Savannah first and there are avenues with old trees. We notice that all the houses have the same muddy color, which gives the towns a certain monotony. We learned that it is a historical color, which also has its own name and belongs to this area.

Harbour City

We find a salad at a supermarket for lunch and eat it on a shady bench in Harbour City at the marina.

We continue to Coligny Beach, where we spend a good hour chilling on porch swings and enjoying the sun. The beach is wide and beautiful, and there are clean chairs, swings, and toilets here. You can tell the quality of the usual crowd.

We then make a detour to an outlet, where we meet a woman in a cosmetics store who works there but comes from Munich.

Back in Savannah, we have dinner at Belfort’s, a restaurant at City Market in a historic building. We sit outside, of course, and enjoy our meal.

Dinner in Savannah

At 8:00 p.m., we decide to take a trip to Tybee Island, which is about 20 minutes away from Savannah. We search for and find the beautiful lighthouse and enjoy a dramatic, photogenic cloud formation.

On the way back, we get lost in the poorly signposted road network and a heavy thunderstorm breaks out. We arrive back at the hotel shortly before 10:00 p.m. Tomorrow, we will leave Savannah and also Georgia to drive to Beaufort and then Charleston. It will be one of the many Beauforts that we will see or pass through on this trip.
