Today, we are going to a museum and helping the owner clean and organize the sales area. The museum is located in an old school that had to close down because there weren't enough students anymore. In Sado, there are many abandoned schools, and the only ones still open are in the 'bigger cities' that still feel almost like deserted villages. The museum houses many old items from the island's history, such as tools used by craftsmen and rice farmers, drawings and photographs of the surroundings, and cultural artifacts. When gold was discovered on the island, people from all over Japan came to Sado, which resulted in a diverse culture where a bit of everything was adopted. The sales area, like the rest of the museum, is quite dusty, but at least there, we want to create some order. The museum's founder creates, paints, and sells wooden toys and small clay figurines. We sort the little figures and wipe down all the shelves. We also rearrange the bookshelf with the photo albums to make everything look tidier. Along with our packed lunch, each of us receives a homemade bamboo shoot in sauce, and I believe it's one of the best things I've ever eaten. When we finish, we spend some time playing with the bamboo toys. Even though we can't have a proper conversation with the older man due to the language barrier, we understand each other quite well without words. As a token of gratitude, we are each allowed to take one of his clay figurines, and the little Kappa I chose will surely feel at home on my bookshelf. On the way back, we make a quick stop at another donut shop, which belongs to the student of the owner of the shop we visited the previous day. They have almost the same donuts, but they come in a cute Toki paper bag. (Toki are the pink ibises that only live on Sado)
