Rozafa, the Lead Mosque, the Mes Bridge

Verëffentlecht: 14.04.2022

Today was a long day. Actually, we wanted to check out of the campsite quite early but then we got carried away talking. As a result, we set off with a considerable delay to visit the Mes Bridge. This is one of the oldest Ottoman arch bridges and, with a length of 108 meters and a width of 3.4 meters, one of the longest still existing of its kind. It has 15 arches, the middle arch is up to 18 meters high. So we went on the bridge, crossed over and came back.

On our way to Rozafa Castle, we passed by the Plumb Mosque. This largest historical mosque is named after the lead that adorned its roofs. Unfortunately, the lead covering fell victim to thieves over time and so the Lead Mosque now only carries its name in memory. Unfortunately, the mosque was built in a depression and regularly gets flooded during rain or snowmelt. One would think it is a lost place, as it is very exposed to decay. But it is still used.

Then we continued to Rozafa Castle. Much to my dismay, it was always a steep uphill walk. But once you're on top, you have a sensational view of the city of Shkodër, Lake Shkodër, and the surroundings.
