When the alarm clock rings the next morning, we try to hurry. We still have an hour's drive before we reach the Sound.
Right on time, we board the Jucy Cruiser, which will take us through Milford Sound for the next two hours. After just a few minutes on the boat, it becomes clear that it was worth the money. Steep cliffs tower on either side, waterfalls find their way from the mountains into the Sound, and sea lions rest on the rocky shores. At the end of the fjord, we reach the Tasman Sea and turn around. The moment our boat moves back into the Sound is indescribable. Take a look at our pictures.
We go straight from the boat to the car, as we have decided to spend the rest of the day on the road. We want to make it to Wanaka so that we can spend the next few days there by the lake. Coffee, a good audiobook, and fresh fruit from a roadside stand help us pass the long drive.
By 6 p.m., we reach Wanaka. A small town on the namesake lake. The lake is blue, the weather is good, and we find a campsite within sight of the water. After dinner, we look forward to a shower before we fall asleep, quite tired.
