Today Heike had the hope that her vision of a vacation in Hawaii would come true. It consisted of alternating between lying on the beach and swimming in the sea.
But first we had to pick up the car at the airport. So we went back to the bus stop and drove back to the airport.
The children were astonished when they saw that Christian had booked a Mustang convertible at the car rental.
Now we could finally go to the beaches. But no one had expected Christian's sudden activism. He didn't intend to go to the beaches at all, but had chosen a route that was dotted with sights. So we visited all the viewpoints. Fortunately, there was also a bay among the points of interest where we could swim. As we approached it, we saw the cars in front of us turning around and driving back. Unfortunately, the tickets for this beach were already sold out at 12:00 p.m. A ticket cost only a measly $25 per person. But you could already park for ten dollars.
So we continued to the next viewpoint. This one had a small beach section. Heike and the children immediately went there, hoping to be able to swim there. Unfortunately, it turned out to be too dangerous. So we climbed around on the rocks a bit. We discovered a small geyser that regularly spouted water. There was also a rock ledge with a pole. You could hold onto it while the waves broke against the rocks behind you. After the first wave, the children were dripping wet.
After this exciting event, everyone was hungry. So we stopped at the first food truck we saw. We ordered two hot dogs with fries and chili con carne with potato salad and rice. The food was really delicious.
In a good mood, Christian thought he could convince us to go for a hike. But he was mistaken. After just a few meters, it was clear that this path would not be easy. After constant grumbling, Christian finally gave in and we turned around halfway. The goal was supposed to be a lighthouse.
We continued on Christian's route when Heike and the children discovered a beautiful beach. They convinced Christian to stop there.
The children immediately ran into the sea. Although there were warning signs on the beach due to high waves, strong currents, and other dangers, it didn't matter. The main thing was the sea and the beach. And indeed, the waves were quite high and the current was quite strong. Nevertheless, we enjoyed being tossed around in the waves and then relaxing on the beach. We also saw real surfers further out, just like in the movies. There were really big waves breaking there, on which the surfers rode. After about three hours, the sun set behind a mountain and cast shadow on the beach. Suddenly, it became uncomfortably cold. So we packed up our things and drove back to our hotel.
There, we dropped off the children and went in search of a parking space. The only parking space we found was on a street where you could only park until 6:00 a.m. After that, you would be towed. But since we didn't want to pay the $40 (!) for parking just for the night, we had to bite the bullet and set three alarms for 5:30 a.m.
