Post No. 3 - the first days in Sydney

Verëffentlecht: 17.08.2016

G'day mate,

How are you doing, where are you from? Two questions I've already heard at least 1000 times since I arrived in Sydney.

Well, let's start at the beginning: I landed on Sunday, 08/14/2016 at 10pm (local time) at Sydney Airport. The runway was so close to the coast that I was afraid we would land in the water. However, that was not the case, so 15 minutes later I was standing in front of passport control. The nice lady only compared my passport with my customs card, which I had to fill out on the plane, and then I was done with customs. After that, I went to baggage claim and was more than happy that my luggage arrived this time. I was also lucky that neither my carry-on nor my backpack were searched, so I could keep all my tobacco.

I took the shuttle for about 15 minutes to the hostel, and that fifteen minutes was very exciting because I had never driven on the left side of the road before. When I arrived at the hostel, I checked in and went to my room. (I'm sharing a room with three other girls from Germany, Canada, and Taiwan.) Since I slept so much on the flight, I didn't want to go to bed yet and went to the lobby, where I met Sven, also from Germany, and had a good conversation with him. He explained some things that you should know in Australia, and I was glad to already know someone.

The next morning, I had breakfast with Sven at the hostel, and then we went to my agency. I spent almost the whole day there listening to several presentations. As the end was approaching (around 3-4pm), jet lag started to take its toll and I almost fell asleep during the presentation. However, the tiredness subsided quickly when I went to Hyde Park for the first time with a guy from my agency. It's a really beautiful spot in this big city where there's hardly any greenery.

On my first evening, I went to a bar with people from the agency where we got a free drink and a pizza. When the people in my group got tired, I stayed in the bar with Quentin and David (people who work for Work n Travel), and later we went to Q's place. There, on my first evening, I already got to know a real Australian flatshare. The people were super nice, and I had a lot of fun. Later, I fell asleep completely exhausted.

The next morning, Q picked me up and showed me all the spots that you have to see in Sydney, like Hyde Park, the library, the botanical garden, the opera house, the Harbour Bridge, Darling Harbour, and many other cool things.

For lunch, we had sandwiches in a cute little café, and then we went to our agency's office. There, I took care of some paperwork until around 5pm when tiredness hit me again, and I went home. An hour later, I went to the bar to meet Sam from my agency and have dinner with her. This time, I came home around 11pm because I was still very tired, and I had another long day ahead of me. On Wednesday, I went to Bondi Beach with Q and David, and yeah, what can I say, it was just a beach, no idea why it's so famous.

After that, I quickly went to the office because I had to create my resume for my job. But I'll tell you more about that later. Tomorrow, we're going to the Blue Mountains to visit the Aborigines. I'll keep you updated.

Cheers
