68-71 days - Antarctic breeze

Verëffentlecht: 10.01.2018

From Monkey Island, we drive on Sunday morning along the 'Southern Scenic' Route to the southernmost part of the country, Invercargill. The small town is quickly visited and there is still time to drive to Bluff. This is the southern counterpart to Cape Reinga in the north of the North Island. So we were in the north and in the south - only now do we realize how far we have come and where we have been.

Now we want to see as many things as possible - next destination: the Catlins - next stop: Waipapa Point!

What a picture - the lighthouse at the southernmost tip and only 4500 km from the South Pole.
NZ sea lions

And suddenly a sea lion appears as an extra on the beach :) very impressive!

Then we drive along the coast to Curio Bay, where we will stay for the next two nights. Not only is there an endless sandy beach and a petrified forest waiting for us, but also the very rare yellow-eyed penguins catch our attention.

After visiting Cathedral Caves on Monday, we lie in wait on the coast for a full four hours to witness the arrival of the penguin parents. We were able to observe a penguin baby in its hiding place early in the morning.

Sun, heat, wind, cold, and many other tourists are our companions. In the meantime, we can admire the 180 million year old petrified forest.

After it looks like the waiting will be in vain for a long time, they finally appear and stumble ashore to feed their offspring.

On Tuesday we continue east to Kaka Point (yes, that's the name of the place), with many places (McLean Falls, Jack's Bay & Blowhole, Nugget Point) to visit along the way.

At Nugget Point, we see the funny penguins again (this time without waiting for long). Impressive to experience these rare animals in the wild!

On the next day, we want to see a city again, so we drive to Dunedin ('daniedin' pronounced).

Oh yeah, not to forget good news at the end: we were already able to sell our mattress and camping gas cooker via the internet ;)
