Middelburg is the capital of the province of Zeeland and the largest city on the Walcheren peninsula.
The Gothic town hall is one of the most beautiful in the Netherlands. The abbey is really big and today includes the Zeeuws Museum. A landmark of Middelburg is the 90 m high tower of the abbey, the long Jan.
Buildings ending in doelen refer to the practice buildings of a specific rifle guild. The Sint Jorisdoelen is the rifle club of the Guild St. George.
A narrow alley called Kuiperspoort is also interesting. Barrels (kuiper = cooper) used to be made here. The location was actually good: once the barrels were ready, they could be rolled down the slightly sloping lane to the docks.
Incidentally, the Reigerstraat is also one of those streets worth seeing. It is always decorated differently and is very idyllic.
