The Far North and Cape Reinga

Verëffentlecht: 08.04.2018

We set off to the top of the North Island. First of all, you need to know that the north of New Zealand is characterized by countless and endlessly long sandy beaches. So our exploration tour was more than just hopping from beach to beach :D At the beginning, we were at a beach where the sand looks slightly pink at low tide and in the sun, which was quite funny to see. After a short rest, we drove to the next beach, which took about 15 minutes. The sand on this beach was as white as in pictures of the Caribbean. The funniest thing was that it squeaked loudly when you walked on it. After collecting some shells and cooling our feet in the sea, we set off towards Cape Reinga. There are plenty of hiking trails around Cape Reinga, all along the coast and partly along the many beaches. We chose one that leads to the lighthouse at the very top. But the interesting thing about this place is not the lighthouse, but the fact that it is the spot where the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean meet. It is quite an impressive sight to see the two oceans collide with such force. After watching this spectacle for an hour, we walked back to the car and headed to another beach, which was located in a small bay and was less crowded. There we had lunch and because the sun didn't do me good, I lay in the car for an hour while Daniel chilled at the beach. After a quick dip in the crystal clear water, we started our way back. On the way home, we stopped at huge sand dunes. The sand dunes were up to 200 meters high. Suddenly, we felt like we were in the middle of the desert, like in Dubai or something. And we had a beautiful sunset (by the way, the sun already sets at 6 PM here...). It feels like being in a movie. You stand on sand dunes with the sea on one side and forests on the other, and everything is green...! Unbelievable!! After that, we went straight to the campsite.
