New Zealand: on the road with the kiwis...

Published: 13.11.2017

New Zealand South Island

After five wonderful days in Anglesea on the Great Ocean Road, we flew from Melbourne to Christchurch after returning our campervan. There, we picked up our next mobile home for the following month. This time it is a slightly older model with already 460,000 (!) diesel kilometers. Until now, I had no idea that cars could reach so many kilometers. At first impression, I was a bit desperate, as the storage spaces were rather modest compared to the previous motorhome. Due to the overnight flight, I practically did not sleep, which doubled my exhaustion and disappointment. But no problem, as long as you have a passionate handyman like Peter with you, who, after a visit to a Bauhaus and the purchase of various plastic boxes, suddenly transforms the very impractical interior into a functional one with suddenly sufficient storage space and also brings in a certain organization system. After that, everything felt better once everything necessary had found its place.

Christchurch is still under construction after the devastating earthquake in 2011. At that time, 185 people were killed and practically the entire historic city center was destroyed. As part of an art project, a white chair was symbolically placed for each victim.

Construction sites and cranes dominate the cityscape and makeshift shops and restaurants adapted from containers can still be seen in many places. However, you can already imagine that in a few years Christchurch will be completely new and modern.

New Zealand has completely captivated us. And that's mainly because of the incredibly beautiful landscape.

The drives through hilly, lush green pastures and what feels like (and actually is) millions of grazing sheep and cattle are simply stunning, pure idyll! Here, wild animals are also bred, which is completely unusual for us.
