Day 10 - Leaking

Published: 10.05.2019

When I said there probably wouldn't be a more unspectacular and relaxed day than yesterday, I didn't know how today would turn out - it's pretty similar!

We sleep in, doze a bit in bed, sit on our veranda as usual, and eat our last toasts there. Today we want to rent snorkel sets (€1.50 per day, per set) and check if this bay really lives up to its snorkeling promises in blogs and online articles. While packing, we discover a tiny lizard in the head section of our backpack, who is completely frightened and slightly panicked. Quick-thinking, we take the backpack outside and shake it off. After the little intruder (although, who's really intruding on whom?) has left, we get our snorkel sets from the reception of our bungalow rental - €30 deposit. We hadn't thought about that, but we convince the not-so-friendly service staff by pointing out our bungalow key and lack of money. She gives us the sets and we go to our friends. Sunscreen on, let it soak in, into the water, broken goggles, take the goggles back and exchange them, come back, new goggles don't have a snorkel attachment, use a hair tie to tie the snorkel to the goggles, into the water!

Unfortunately, we start at a slightly deserted coral colony, but we immediately discover the first larger fish. Incredibly colorful and at least one meter long, these creatures are quite a difference compared to the somewhat simpler specimens I've seen snorkeling before. In the center of the bay, we discover a large area with still living corals (are these corals? They look like mini Christmas trees in blue and yellow, which retract when they sense potential enemies approaching) , anemones, and giant clams. As soon as you linger for a bit, dozens of small fish rush towards you, curiously examining and occasionally nibbling at you - not pleasant. After a while, I realize that it's not my breathing technique or the waves causing me to swallow so much water, but the fact that my snorkel is leaking. Undeterred by this annoying triviality, we continue circling in the water, exploring the entire bay, and then head back to the beach. By the way, compared to some others (every second person has either bleeding or already treated wounds from corals on their body - many corals are only a few centimeters below the water surface), I only have a small injury on my foot. Pro tip: After that, if possible, try to spray mosquito repellent AROUND THE WOUND.

At some point, I get a bit bored - I simply don't enjoy lying in the sun, getting roasted, and doing nothing - so I go back to our bungalow and occupy myself with photos and videos. Within seconds, it starts pouring as if the sky has opened up, and as quickly as the rain comes, it also goes away after 5 minutes. Jonna joins me, we spend some time on our veranda, and wait to be picked up by our friends. We then walk together to our favorite restaurant and have dinner there.

We finish eating and make our way to the reggae bar we selected. The path is steep but beautifully lit; furthermore, an incredibly cute dog accompanies us, who, as we later find out, goes by the name 'Rock' (quote: 'Like Rock n' Roll').
