Day 14 - still in Oudtshoorn

Published: 02.08.2018

Well, today we were supposed to continue to Stellenbosch, our last stop, but Charley has been vomiting since 5 am this morning. No chance of getting the girl in the car. Poor thing, she's feeling sooooo bad. We were allowed to stay until 12pm to see if we could still make it, but Charley looked like a corpse and couldn't keep anything down. Typical case of stomach bug, fortunately without the intestines. So we had to bite the bullet and book another night. One less night in Stellenbosch. Oh well, you do what you gotta do. After we had provided Charley with cola, black tea, salt and sugar water, etc., Vera and I set out to explore the city. Charley wanted to have some peace and quiet and sleep if possible. So Vera and I walked towards the city, visited all the souvenir shops in Oudtshoorn, and even went to the city museum. Once again, it mostly revolved around ostriches, but also included the city's history, artifacts were on display, and we also saw Vera's thing on display. You see, Vera found a thing at Jeffreys Bay beach and brought it with her, and since then we've been trying to figure out what this thing is. It seems to be a shell or a shell of an animal, but we don't know what it's from. Of course, the museum didn't say what the thing was, so we're pretty much in the dark. But we won't give up. Another unsolved mystery is the smell of cannabis. Yes, it smells like cannabis/marijuana in many places here, but not in the cities, but in the middle of nowhere, on the highway or the freeway where there's nothing around and it's CONSTANT. There must be some herb here that smells damn close to it, but we can't find it. Maybe at least the mystery of the thing will be solved before we go home. I'll also upload a photo and maybe one of you knows what the thing is.

Like I said, we explored Oudtshoorn entirely on foot, which wasn't always easy because both Vera and I are still blessed with strong muscle soreness from horseback riding and we're walking a bit uneven. But we would do it again anyway.

After we checked on Charley in the early afternoon, who luckily no longer vomits but has no color in her face, I got a little hungry. On the way back from the city, Vera and I discovered a waffle and pancake house and drove there by car. The chai latte was also excellent... But I should have just left the waffle. The waffle tasted like nothing. The cream on the waffle tasted like nothing and the mixed berries on the whole thing were terribly sour. I tried to salvage what I could by sprinkling a little sugar on top, but no. It was no use. I couldn't even bring myself to finish it. No thank you. And in the evening, I should be annoyed because I had a delicious dinner but was still a little full from the lousy waffle. Annoying.

But at least Charley was a little better in the evening. She could speak full sentences and at least keep water down in small sips. We also urgently need to go to Stellenbosch tomorrow because our flight back home is the day after tomorrow.
