Das Alberni Inlet bis Ucluelet

Published: 23.08.2019

Wednesday 11.7. Port Alberni - boat tour to Ucluelet and back

Unfortunately, I wake up at 5:00 am, but only get up at 6:30 am. The hairdryer is broken and I report it to the front desk. Somehow, there are bad vibrations here because they have a problem with the technology... I quickly grab a coffee standing up at the hotel and drive to the boat. Now lots of plastic containers are being loaded by kayak riders because the boat is going to Sechart Lodge, a base for kayak tours in the Broken Group of Islands.

Unfortunately, the weather is not good this morning and what we think is morning fog doesn't really dissipate. Eventually, I sit in a protected corner with my fleece jacket and rain jacket and read. It's really cold. In the distance, we see whales blowing and some bald eagles sitting high up in the pines on the shore.

We reach Ucluelet at 1:00 pm after a really beautiful scenic ride and have an hour to walk around. The town is small, very small, and I quickly walk through it, get a coffee and a hotdog, and go back to the boat.

Ucluelet

The town is located on a steep slope and offers a beautiful view over the Alberni Inlet. Bald eagles are flying around everywhere and a fat seal is sunning itself on a dock.

At 2:00 pm, we take a slightly different route back to Port Alberni through the Broken Group.

But before we get to calm waters, we are treated to a view of the Pacific Ocean. The waves break on an offshore rock ledge, the Pacific Rim. The Broken Group has over 400 islands, only 100 of which have names. But some are just better rocks with a tree - who wants to make up names for those?!

The return journey is beautiful, and the clouded sky is even more annoying when taking pictures of this scenery, which would be an absolute dream in the sunshine.

Suddenly, whales appear in front of us. The captain stops the engines and everyone hangs over the railing with their cameras ready to capture the pair of humpback whales.

At 5:00 pm, the sun finally shines, but there is still a freezing cold wind. We arrive in Port Alberni at 7:15 pm.

I sit in the sun for a moment to warm up, then go to Walmart because raspberries and bananas are all gone and find a restaurant that has only mediocre food. I am back at the hotel at 9:30 pm. The Wi-Fi is still not working and the hairdryer has not been replaced.
