28.12.2017 - Wanaka, the 2nd day

Published: 28.12.2017

We have been on the road for 14 days already and we are filled with so many experiences and impressions. All of this needs to be processed and at least Birgit feels 'natural and emotional overloaded'. So we spend the day with different activities. Birgit is in Christine's garden on a sun lounger and I have decided to hike up Roys Peak, allegedly a 'must' when you are in Wanaka.

So, hat on and off we go. It is about 1,300 meters of altitude gain up to 1,580 meters above sea level, 2 hours steadily uphill at 25°C, unfortunately without shade. For the mentioned reasons, there are hardly any trees, only bushes and sheep. Since there is little wind and a wide view, you can also see some paragliders coming down - that brings back memories and longing. Once you reach the top, you will be rewarded with a truly sensational view over Lake Wanaka (360° video - works best with newer smartphones). In the winter months, the mountain is mostly covered with snow, but today you can see beautifully up to the glaciers with such clear visibility.

On the way back down, you can see paragliders again. I think this is really the most beautiful way to get back down the mountain, breathtaking view included.

Tomorrow will be another long drive, about 400km to Harihari, so I'm glad I could strain my limbs a bit today.
