Whitehorse - Alaska - Dawson City

Published: 20.07.2024

Hello everyone, we have now arrived in Dawson City in the Yukon province. We drove the Alaska Highway about 2000 km from Fort St. John to Tetlin Junction in Alaska. During the journey, we spent several days in Whitehorse. Whitehorse is our favorite city here in the remote North. The city has about 35,000 residents, not too big, but it offers all the infrastructure. There are some good restaurants and shops, a small downtown area, and the waterfront along the Yukon River is particularly beautiful. I (Matthias) could live here permanently.

In Kluane National Park, we stayed at a campground that is so frequented by Grizzlies (at night) that tents must be in an area secured by an electric fence. But we haven't seen any Grizzlies yet.

In Alaska, we spent several days. It is a highlight for us that our camper has now traveled through Alaska as well. The basic campsites here cost 12 USD, but we happened to find a place that is free. Even canoeing here was free, including paddles and life jackets. Overall, Americans were just as friendly to us as Canadians. Crossing the border into the USA with a German car was no problem at all, contrary to our fears.
From Alaska, we drove the Taylor and Top-of-the-World Highway to Dawson City, the gold rush town. You can still find gold here, and gold mines are still in operation. The trip from Alaska back to Canada was very difficult as the highways were not paved and were muddied by the rain.

In Dawson City, we are taking a few days off to prepare ourselves and the camper for the journey on the Dempster Highway (about 2000 km round trip on gravel roads) to the Arctic Ocean.
We will be without network for a few days and will update after our return from this section. Until then.
