Day 20: Port Hedland

Published: 03.10.2018

Samuel wakes up at 6 o'clock today and wants to go to the pool. Unfortunately, it only opens at 7:30 am, so we have to find something to do in the meantime. It doesn't take long and the two little ones are also awake (that's the disadvantage of living in such a small space). Michi explores the campsite and the beach with the kids. In the meantime, I update our blog. Finally, after breakfast, when the pool is finally cleaned and ready, there is nothing stopping us from enjoying a swim.

The kids have a lot of fun splashing around and we don't want to stress. So we decide to stay one more night in Port Hedland. We clean up our camper. That means emptying the toilet and grey water, filling up the water tank, and trying to remove as much of the red dirt as possible. It's unbelievable how red our Maui has become in the last few days. There is already quite a bit of protective clothing (unfortunately, more of the food ends up on the bench or on the floor than in the kids' stomachs) and so we take the opportunity to do our laundry.

At noon we have curry with rice and we splash around in the pool again. Afterwards, we borrow a two-seater go-kart at the campground reception. Samuel and Maxi have a great time (10 AUD for 30 minutes).

In the late afternoon, we go on a tour. We drive to the harbor. There is a nice playground right by the water. It's great for watching the huge cargo ships while playing. Tonight, we go to the Box Inn again. It's not so much about the food, but we just need internet access again to update our blog. The campground's wifi is unfortunately broken and free wifi at McDonald's is just great! Of course, that also includes a Happy Meal (here, in addition to the nuggets, there is also grilled chicken fillet, which all 3 kids really like) and a McFlurry.

The kids are pretty tired. Elija and Maxima fall asleep on the way back to the campground. Samuel still talks to Grandma Gusti, Aunt Sabine, and Niece Gloria on the phone. Video calling over the internet is a great and cheap thing while traveling.
