After the morning fire and a short, sparse breakfast consisting of a roll from the previous day and a few nuts, Porter and I head up towards Refugio Quetrus. Halfway there, we meet Lars and Pati to repair a wooden bridge using rusty nails and two hammers. It's rather makeshift, like most of the craftsmanship here in the park, but it holds (for now).

Once we reach Refugio Quetrus, we spend several hours making fire, cooking, and baking bread. Afterwards, we gather some sacks of dead bamboo from the forest. It's great for fueling the fire. That's when I see a condor for the first time. Quite elegant for a vulture, gliding effortlessly without a single flap of its wings, the largest bird in the world. In the evening, Porter tells me about life in the village in the Bible Belt of Texas and shows me photos of his hunting trophies.
