After a bus ride of nearly 13 hours from Saturday to Sunday, we finally arrived in Byron Bay. We dropped off our bags and headed straight to the beach!
Finally, we arrived in the warmth and were able to unpack our bathing suits for the first time 👍 Markus ran straight into the sea (it was still a bit too chilly for me because of the wind) 😀 We spent the afternoon playing cards by the hostel pool.
On Monday, we visited the 'Lighthouse' - a lighthouse that offers a beautiful view! It took us a little over an hour to hike up the mountain, climbing over rocks, wading through the sea, and then endless uphill through the jungle 😀 But it was definitely worth it, and it also counted as our workout for the day 😀
In the evening, we wanted to go out to one or two bars/clubs, but it was a total disappointment.. no one was at the first club, and there were maybe 8 people at the second club.. Oh well, then let's go back to the hostel.
Tuesday was Markus' big day 😀 he rented a surfboard and wanted to give it a try! We walked to a beach recommended by the hostel staff, where the waves were very flat and slow, making it ideal for beginners. I watched him from the beach and cheered him on, and guess what - he managed to catch the speed of the wave once and surf on his knees 👍😊 After about two hours, he gave up waiting for the waves, which were really bad that day and hardly any surfers were riding them.. It was a bit disappointing, but I'm sure it won't be the last time!
Oh, and in the last picture you can see 'Lary' (his wife didn't want to be in the picture). Lary has been living in the hostel for over 20 years 😀 We were extremely scared when we first met him, but they're used to humans and are very tame and even let you pet them! But as soon as a piece of apricot from breakfast falls on the floor, it's immediately stolen and eaten 😀
Our hostel with its own pool was really nice, and the beaches were truly amazing and not crowded at all! But other than surfing and lying on the beach, there's not much to do in Byron Bay, so four days were definitely enough! Nevertheless, it was a really beautiful place and a good break from our city trips 😄😊
