BLOG 10: Outer Hebrides / Part 2

Жарыяланган: 04.06.2023

Let's go to Dun Carloway (Scottish Gaelic: Dùn Chàrlabhaigh), a Broch tower. But what is a 'Broch'?

A Broch is a round, windowless, Iron Age tower that can be found in Scotland, especially in Caithness, but also on the offshore islands (Orkney, Shetland and Hebrides).

Carloway is a remarkably well-preserved Broch - parts of the wall on the east side still reach a height of 30 feet. In some places there are also more modern repairs on the east wall. Dun Carloway was probably founded in the 1st century BC. built. The base of the broch is 14 to 15 meters in diameter and the walls are 3 meters thick. It has a circular plan and hollow walls, and was built without mortar. The Broch probably had wooden floors, interior walls, and a thatched roof necessary to make it habitable, but the only remaining evidence of this is the holes in the walls.

From the hill of Dun Carloway there is also a fine view of the countryside of lochs and barren hills.
