So here we are again. After about three months in Germany (there were no flights back or they were cancelled), some incidents like surgery, being taken by ambulance from the plane, pelvic inflammation, etc., we are finally back in Buenos Aires and also healthy again :) We are glad to be able to go to school 'normally' again, to have a daily routine, and slowly start to experience things and continue exploring the city...
We have now designated Tuesday as our 'adult exploration day' as I currently don't have school and the kids are all in school. It's so unusual and new that all three kids are in school until the afternoon every day and one has time to work or even do something together as a couple...
Yesterday we were in Recoleta in the city with a couple of friends enjoying a city tour with a hearty breakfast beforehand. It was wonderful! Above you can see the pictures :)
First, we met at the café 'La Biela', where racers and writers used to meet, including Jorge Luis Borges. That's why there is a monument to the two men in the café, Borges with a friend, who forever occupy table 2. While we were having a royal breakfast here, a man at the neighboring table was polishing a couple's shoes, which we found very strange...
Afterwards, we walked along one of the oldest churches in Buenos Aires towards Palermo. We took a look at the National Library from the outside, a very ugly building. It's called 'brutalism', the architectural style of modernism. A lot of solid concrete - if you like it...
In the past, Eva Perón (Evita) used to live there, but the house was demolished to take away from people the place of pilgrimage. For this, you have to know that she and especially her husband Juan Perón were no longer popular in the end, and only Hollywood has given us a rather positive image of that time... But today there is a monument to Evita nearby and also one of her husband (the head).
The sitting old man is once again Jorge Luis Borges, who was also the director of the National Library. In between, we saw a film crew...
Then we briefly visited the Museo Nacional de Arte Decorativo and then looked at the only statue in all of Argentina with San Martin, the founder of the state, as an old man. From there, we went to Casa de Mario Palanti, the architect who also designed the Palacio Bariolo. The house looks like it's in Italy or Spain with the orange trees in the garden, which smell wonderful. Then we walked back to Floralis Generica and past the university to the bridge of the Faculty of Law. There is all sorts of trash on the steps in front of the university - remnants of what is thrown at the graduates when they have completed their studies and come out. Among other things, paint, eggs, all sorts of disgusting things, and then most of them have to take the train home because they can't sit in the car like that... For us, a somewhat strange custom but interesting. It was a beautiful morning :)
