We drove from Cape Canaveral to the other side of the peninsula to Fort Myers. There is actually a small historic old town there. I was pleasantly surprised, I didn't expect that. It was actually very pretty there. We treated ourselves to a delicious coffee in a real coffee roastery, located next to Starbucks. I don't have to mention that the Starbucks was full, the other shop was completely empty. We found out that the owner is from Germany. Maybe that's why everything felt so familiar to us 😊☕️.
The next day we drove through the Everglades. We saw a variety of animals. Alligators, turtles, various birds, fish, a snake, lizards, and even a deer. Only the panther didn't show up. We also took the usual airboat ride through the mangrove forests. We didn't see any alligators, no wonder with the noise that all those boats make. At least we saw a few North American raccoons.
Then we continued to the Florida Keys. The water has a dreamlike color, turquoise and dark blue, and the beaches are great. In Key West, I wanted to take a photo of the southernmost point of the USA. But the line in front of it scared me off, so I only took a photo from the car. Finally, we also ate fresh fish in a nice restaurant by the sea.
We had Miami on our plan as well. There were too many people for me, but the skyline is impressive and the marina is very beautiful. The yachts that are there are something else. While eating, we watched four cruise ships leave the harbor and nostalgically thought about our beautiful cruise. Of course, we also drove along Ocean Drive. It was incredibly crowded, as the CSD (Christopher Street Day) and Spring Break (a kind of vacation for college students) were happening at the same time, so it was impossible to stop and get out of the car. But I found it sufficient as it was. Some of the people walking around were already 😱.
Yesterday we flew to Baltimore and tomorrow we can pick up the camper. On to the next part of our adventure.
