Day 16 - Ride to Portland

Жарыяланган: 13.01.2023

We start the day with a small breakfast outside our room. Then we leave Port Fairy and drive to the Byaduk Caves. The caves are located in Napier State Park and form a connection of underground caves that were formed about 30,000 years ago when the lava from the nearby volcano Mount Napier solidified on the surface and molten lava flowed beneath. It is remarkable how well preserved the caves are and how overgrown they are. There are many beautiful white butterflies at the caves, but unfortunately also some flies that attack us. Nevertheless, we are happy to have seen some animals so far and to have been spared from mosquitoes, snakes, large spiders or cockroaches.

Then we continue to the Wannon Falls, a waterfall that was also formed by lava flow and contains quite murky and slightly musty water, but offers a very beautiful backdrop. Nearby is another waterfall that was created by the lava, the Nigretta Falls. This waterfall is further downstream and is also fed by the Wannon River. We walk a little way downstream of the waterfall enjoying the beautiful nature.

After that, we drive on to Portland, where we will also spend the night. Before we go out for Chinese food in the evening, we walk past the harbor. We discover that there is currently a carnival festival at the harbor. We quickly realize that it refers to a small fair with a few rides for children.
