It's so hot! Even though we're not even 200 km further south, it feels much warmer here! We already turn on the air conditioning in the morning for the sake of the cats 😅.
At noon, we drive to Trogir, which is only 5 km away. The first thing we smell when we get out of the car in the parking lot is rotten garbage 🤢, the smell accompanies us all the way to the old town. But the first impression was deceiving. The old town is really beautiful (UNESCO World Heritage)! After about 1.5 hours we're done though.
We decide to go to Split today, which is only 25 km away. Before that, we want to withdraw some money. An exchange rate of 6.8? No way - then we try a different ATM in Split (where the rate was 6.9 🙄, according to the internet the official rate is currently 7.4 - thanks for nothing).
As we drive towards Split, we see how huge the city is. And first of all, we see many really ugly high-rise buildings. After some searching, we finally found the old town and the parking lot (20 Kuna = 3 € per hour!). One should always just follow the crowds of tourists. The old town is really beautiful, the old walls are surprisingly well preserved. But sooo many people 😱. Tour groups are driven through the streets in a wild mixture of languages. No, this is not our thing at all, so we leave the parking lot after only 45 minutes and head back to the campsite.
By now we know that we don't need to go to Dubrovnik anymore. It's supposed to be even worse in terms of tourist crowds, especially when the cruise ship passengers come ashore.
But where to then? Hvar? Brač? Korčula? All of them can only be reached by ferry and we don't even have the ultimate campsite tip for any of them 🤔. According to the reviews, one is infested with processionary caterpillars, the next one only has rocky beaches, some are said to be very difficult to access with a caravan, and none of them offer ACSI discount.
All in all, we haven't liked the south so far, so we decide that we're heading back north from now on. We know so many great places on Krk and in Istria that we don't want to waste our time down here anymore. Tomorrow we'll go to the waterfalls in Krka National Park.
