Because we already had a week off from university, I recently took a trip to Java, Bali's big neighboring island. Although the bus journey from Tabanan to Yogyakarta is not exactly fast, it is very cheap, and during the almost 19 hours, you have some time to get to know your seat neighbors (or simply sleep haha).
Although the people at the hostel were super nice and they had a pool with those fish that nibble on the dead skin of your feet, I also went out to see the main attractions.
Yogyakarta (or simply 'Jogja', as the cool people say, not to be confused with the capital Jakarta!) is the capital of the Sultanate of the same name (one of the few remaining in the country) and although it is similar to Bali in some ways, it is significantly influenced by Islam.
You can also go out very well here in the evenings, often live music is played, the good Bintang beer is drunk, and finally the sunrise is enjoyed in the garden, which of course I didn't miss any evening.
Also, another music tip: Iwan Fals is generally celebrated a lot, and he has written many system-critical lyrics that almost everyone can sing along to here.
