Split - the second largest city in Croatia (3rd stop)

Dɛn dɔn pablish am: 16.06.2021

In the past few days, we have experienced so much that we haven't had time to update the entries - sorry for that ;)

From Zagreb, we took a train that zigzagged across Croatia to the sea. The 6-hour journey flew by. When we arrived in Split, we were hit by the heat after being in the air-conditioned train. It's pretty warm here... but we also immediately smell the sea air, as the train station is right on the coast. Our hostel (CroParadise Green) is located on the edge of the old town, it's beautiful, and the owner is super friendly and helpful. After dropping off our stuff, we head straight to the sea. But before that, we wanted to briefly visit the viewpoint on Marjan. "Briefly" is an understatement, it turned into an almost 7 km walk until we finally arrived at the beach. But the path took us through several beautiful viewpoints and a nice park, so it was worth it. The water is still quite cold, but beautifully clear and warm enough for a quick dip. Babsi and Lukas are the first to test it and manage to get out of the water unharmed. Veronika brings along a few sea urchin spines, but they were able to be removed at the hostel. So we could start the evening without any problems.

In the park directly opposite (Josipa Jurja Strossmayera), there happened to be a street food festival - lucky us. We fuel ourselves up there before getting some ice cream and licking it at the Riva. When we return to the festival, the atmosphere has switched to party mode. A DJ is playing and we enjoy being able to dance properly again after a long time.

The next day, we visited the sights of the old town. Split is surrounded by the mountains Mosor, Kozjak, and the Perun mountain range. The city is 1700 years old. The most characteristic feature is the Diocletian's Palace, where part of the old town is located. The palace allows us to travel back in time to ancient times: magnificent, powerful columns, squares, and buildings remind us of the Roman era of Split. We really like the narrow streets of the old town. After that, we go to the most famous beach in Split (Bacvice) and spend the whole afternoon there. In the evening, we cook ourselves a delicious dinner at the hostel (and drink grapefruit radler). Then we take a leisurely stroll through the old town again and come across live music at the cathedral. We sit here for a while and listen. A really successful evening.

Lukas's birthday starts with sleeping in and a delicious breakfast in the sun at the Riva. We take a ferry to the island of Brac, which first takes us to the town of Supetar. We continue by bus to the other side of the island to Bol. The journey gives us a great overview of the island's landscape. The beach in Bol is beautiful and very famous, and luckily not overcrowded. But everything here costs something, even the toilet. On the way back, we can see a beautiful sunset from the ferry - and Lukas can make his birthday calls ;). To celebrate the day, we treat ourselves to a really good dinner at fig in a courtyard in the old town, and even a glass of wine. Since the next day we're already continuing to Dubrovnik at 5.15 am and Babsi has a runny nose, we go to bed earlier. Don't worry, the next entry won't be long in coming...
