22/02/2020 Bay of Pigs
Today we have a driving day, we move, 350 km in a southerly direction. After experiments with bad roads, we don't give up the highway, called Auto_Pista here. On the way, we crave a coffee and it is no problem to leave the car on the hard shoulder of the autopista and walk across the lanes to get to the small rest stop.
The Bay of Pigs includes an extensive swamp and mangrove area. Crocodiles live here, but they are now mostly kept in farms instead of being free to swim around. Maybe they are a secret weapon in case the exiled Cubans try to attack Cuba a second time at the Bay of Pigs, then the Cubans could release the crocodiles. (That's a bad joke, I know)
We eat crocodile goulash, and it has nothing to do with the crocodile meat we have already eaten in Zimbabwe or Australia. We skip the visit to the crocodiles in the farm.
The Bay of Pigs, or rather Playa Larga, is a popular tourist area, the staff of the guest houses, fortunately there are no large hotel complexes due to lack of investment funds, make a lot of effort to satisfy the tourists. And it is mostly foreign European guests who sit on the beach and in the bars and have cocktails served to them early in the afternoon. It is also possible to have a full body massage on the beach for about 25 euros. I treat myself to that and the masseur really goes all out.
It's quite an experience.
