Once on the ground, everything happens very quickly. Pick up luggage, wander through the airport like a pack mule, pick up our rental car, and then the temperature shock outside the door.
Instead of the currently sunny 35 degrees Celsius in Germany, here it is a cool 13 degrees with a lot of wind! So quickly into the car, turn on the heater, radio, and off towards Reykjavik!
Already on the one-hour drive from the somewhat remote airport to the city, we are impressed by the incredibly beautiful nature. Well, and a little confused by the so-called "highways" and the associated speed limit. But the better we can enjoy the nature! At least as a driver - the rest of us had to look at what we can see with a huge backpack on our lap. But unfortunately, our small VW Polo did not have the desired space in the trunk.
The end of our car ride was a small double house about 10 minutes from the city of Reykjavík. Inside is our little apartment that has everything you could wish for and should become our first "home away from home".
Quickly put everything in the living area, put on a warm sweater and rain jacket to explore the city a bit. Good thing we locked ourselves out for a short time, no one needs to know, we made it back in!
Park the car for free somewhere and then continue on foot.
Definitely more difficult than expected ... after all, it was already evening, we were tired, hungry, and also felt the 2-hour time difference in our bodies. On top of that, it felt like it was -30 degrees here.
So just take a short walk through a few streets towards the harbor and then rush into the first supermarket to realize how expensive food is in Iceland. But what can you do, we have to eat something, so we stock up on enough noodles, yogurt, cereal, crispbread, and cream cheese to hopefully get through the next few days without hunger (wrong to think that, we went shopping 2 more times).
Once home, it's time to quickly cook something and just fall into bed to be prepared and rested for the days to come!
