Day 7: Omaha Beach

Dɛn dɔn pablish am: 21.08.2021

On this day, we will focus on the D-Day and World War II. Our first stop is the Pegasus Bridge in Ouistreham, where there is a museum with the old bridge. During World War II, the main objective of capturing the bridge was to secure the eastern flank of the invasion troops in Normandy. We will observe the bridge from the outside and skip the museum, then continue on our journey. Our next stop is the Atlantic Wall Museum, a large Nazi bunker with 4 floors, displaying equipment and memorabilia from the Allied landing beach. It vividly describes and exhibits the life of the soldiers. After an hour, our tour will end and we will drive to Arromanches-les-Bains. Almost every town here has a museum or memorial. We will stroll through the small coastal town and have crepes for lunch. Then, we will proceed to Pointe du Hoc, where there was a 30-meter high German stronghold on the cliffs. The Allies climbed the cliff under fire and successfully took over this important section. We will walk along a circular path with beautiful views of the coast. Old bunker structures are still preserved, providing a vivid illustration of the situation back then. Finally, we will arrive at Omaha Beach around 3:30 PM and settle in at our campsite. From the site, we can look out at the English Channel and walk there. The sun even comes out, but it is too cold for swimming. However, there is a covered pool on-site, so we can still have fun in the water even if it rains. Then, we will cook our dinner together and enjoy our expensive Calvados.
