Week 38 - Fjord Norway

게시됨: 07.08.2022

This week turned out to be completely different than expected.

My friend Janine and her boyfriend Manu are also currently in Norway, and we have been in touch the whole time because we wanted to meet up. Since the weather forecast for the Flåm area (where we both were) was really bad, we decided to stay at a small campsite by the Naeroyfjord.

On the way there, I made a stop at the mountain Storehaugen to enjoy the view from the top. I wanted to make the most of the last day with good weather.

On Tuesday, I went to the campsite where I met Janine and Manu. The reunion after 8 months was naturally great, and we didn't care much about the bad weather. We spent the day in my camper van, talking and playing cards. The next morning, we received the news: Due to heavy rainfall, there were several rockfalls in the area. In addition to all the tunnels and roads, the only road out of the valley was also closed. The biggest rockfall happened here. Throughout the day, we learned more through local news: A rock the size of a car fell from the mountain onto the road in front of the valley, and there was 1 meter high rubble on the road in the valley.

We took the situation relatively calmly, as we couldn't change anything anyway. Our host Olav offered to take us by boat to the next town with a supermarket. Since we still had enough groceries, we had to decline the offer (unfortunately).

We filled the time with watching movies, playing cards, and having a BBQ with our campsite neighbors.

On Thursday, we finally received the relieving news: The road is open again, and we can leave the valley in a convoy.

We were glad to finally be able to continue our journey. Because my days in Norway are numbered, and there is still so much to do :-)

On Thursday, we went straight to Vøringfossen. The waterfall is well-filled after all the rainy days, and from the viewpoint, you can have a nice view into the valley where the river continues to flow.

On Saturday, it was time to explore the Hardingervidda National Park. I went for a hike in the barren landscape in drizzling rain. Since my starting point was already at over 1000 meters, it was bitterly cold here. I decided not to sleep here but drove to a parking lot by the Hardangerfjord.

Today, I went to Nyastølfossen. In light drizzling rain, I completed the hike with another solo traveler ;-)

Starting tomorrow, the weather should improve for me again, and I'm looking forward to sunshine and 20 degrees :-)
