For a change, we are getting up early today. When we leave the hostel, it is still dark and no pilgrims in sight. I don't think I'm a morning person, walking is sooo difficult for me, or maybe it's because I didn't sleep all night. To cheer myself up, I have chocolate rolls. So I continue walking properly. 5km. 10km. 15km. Time for lunch. Giant sandwich with prosciutto, just prosciutto, no salad, no tomato, nothing. But it's absolutely not necessary. The prosciutto is so delicious in Spain. I'm also eating olives here, I never thought I would. So let's continue. Still 20km to Santiago de Compostela! Our plan is to stay about 10km before Santiago. But....
We can't give up so close to the finish line! After a few eucalyptus forests, our goal seems near and Spain shows its ugly side. Smog. Decaying buildings. Unfinished houses and industrial areas. We don't understand why the otherwise beautiful Camino should end like this. The worst thing is a hostel complex with about 30 buildings that was never used... What could be done here....
Google Maps shows us another 2.8km to the center of Santiago. It goes up, it goes down, then up again and almost back to the same spot. What's the point? Does the pilgrim still have to practice humility?! Once again in a wide arc around Santiago... Google Maps says another 3.5km to the center. My feet hurt and because of my constantly growing fatigue, I stumble frequently. It doesn't make things easier. Finally, we approach houses, ugly houses. Santiago doesn't like us at first. We pass by the first hostel, also the second one. Just before the town center, we decide to go to a hostel after all... 14 euros per person. Way too expensive for a bed next to cardboard walls and curtains. After the shower, we go in search of the famous church and, typically, we walk in the wrong direction. So we turn back and tadaaa. There it stands, beautiful, magnificent and scaffolded. Typical, my bad luck. So we admire the surrounding historical, magnificent buildings. We treat ourselves to Dürüm for dinner. Haha. So now I'm lying in my bunk bed, dead tired, and thinking about what we should do for the next 9 days.
