From Matera we drive across a plateau with huge fields before reaching the sea again in Taranto. This side of the boot is flat, has endless sandy beaches and dunes that alternate with small coves.
After 8 weeks, we reach the southernmost point at Marina di Leuca. From now on, we head back north!
The coast to Otranto is beautiful, we cycle high above the sea, past huge oleanders, turquoise coves, noble villas and pretty towns.
After visiting the cathedral of Otranto with its huge mosaic floor (1596 sqm), we continue along the coast until shortly before Brindisi. Here we turn inland to Ostuni. We are thrilled by olive plantations with ancient trees. Ostuni is known as the white city, the old town perches on a hill and we love the narrow streets and lovingly restored houses.
Then we pass through the interesting area of the trulli houses until we reach Alberobello. There are still 1400 trulli to see. We have a lot of fun strolling through this very special atmosphere and admiring the many details. Even a Chinese bridal couple uses this fairytale world for their wedding photos.
It is now consistently very warm. Italians have 11 weeks of summer vacation, and accordingly, campsites, beaches, and towns are filling up. Sometimes we don't enjoy the nightly animation and discos in the neighborhood.
We have cycled 3516 kilometers and climbed 25086 meters without a breakdown!
