November 27, 2021: Saint-Tropez and Port-Grimaud
F. Saint-Tropez - the party mecca of the rich and famous. At least that's how I imagined it. When we arrived in Saint-Tropez, we quickly realized that this statement only applies in the summer. Like the many other places we visited on the Mediterranean in the last few days, Saint-Tropez is in hibernation in the winter. However, it is more noticeable here than anywhere else because it feels like fewer locals seem to live here. The shopping streets are deserted and not a single shop was open. Only in the old harbor, a few restaurants were open, which were quite busy at lunchtime, because the French have a pronounced lunch culture. Since most shops take an extended lunch break between 12 and 2/3 PM and close the store, many French people go to restaurants for lunch with friends and colleagues. In the old harbor, there were a few larger yachts that we had only seen in La Ciotat so far. And in the city, various luxury cars drove from villa to villa, which were either being renovated or looked quite abandoned. In addition to all the villas, various 5-star hotels were also signposted. So a little wealth was still evident.
After the rather disappointing impression of Saint-Tropez, we continued to drive to Port-Grimaud. This harbor does not have a large harbor basin like a normal harbor, but it consists of many small land arms on which row houses stand. The houses are so narrow that a sailboat or motorboat can lie in the water in front of each entrance. Some land parts can only be reached from the mainland via a narrow bridge and naturally from the water side. On land, almost every house also has a small carport, which in many cases only has a roof made of a sail as a sunshade. The largest arm of the harbor facility can only be accessed by cars through a barrier, which can only be operated by a porter in a small glass house day and night. That's what I call exclusivity or protected neighborhood.
Actually, our plan was to drive along the Mediterranean coast to Monaco in the coming days. However, very cold weather with nighttime temperatures below freezing was forecasted for this region next week, so we spontaneously decided to leave Port-Grimaud and Saint-Tropez as the easternmost point and now head back southwest and towards Spain. We will visit the places that are still on our list on the way back…
