We sleep in today (it's raining here in the morning anyway... Our first conscious rain in 3 weeks in Canada since the warm hail shower in Golden halfway through) and enjoy a bit more comfort in our accommodation - some peace (and a care mask🧖♂️🧖♀️) for our slightly reddened faces 😅 The house doesn't seem too old. Overall, it seems that a lot here in Tofino is geared towards tourists.
Around noon, the rain eases for a short while, so we drive a few minutes to the Mudflats (intertidal zone). The play of clouds makes the small islands before us appear and just as quickly disappear. We are watched at the viewpoint by a seal. The trees here in the rainforest grow in some really curious ways - some branches at 10m height look like roots stretching out in all directions😅 Next to our car, we pick a few blackberries 😊
On the other side of the coast at the Pacific, we stop at Cox Bay, where everyone is surfing. It starts to rain again... We still hike to Pettinger Point at the tip of the bay onto the rocks 😅 By now completely soaked... Afterwards, we deserve a hot chocolate. We are a bit sad that right now the weather at THIS beach location in Tofino is so bad... but oh well 🤷♂️ We can’t change it. We are considering leaving a bit earlier tomorrow and heading towards Victoria if the weather remains like this...
We initially skip the third trail leading to several small beaches directly in the village. A hot chocolate later and strengthened by an earlier dinner, we do want to go out again and make use of the viewpoint on the west side of Tofino. Unfortunately, we don’t see a sunset like yesterday due to the rainy weather... The Tonquin Trail leads a few hundred meters across the forest (today’s rainforest 😅) from beach to beach - in between there are small viewpoints on wooden platforms. The individual planks can be personalized with your own name - we suspect a purchase is required, so they keep the wooden walkways intact. We stop briefly at the pier - there we see again the 5 dome-shaped tent accommodations at the northern tip of the village directly by the water (200-300 Euros a night - presumably available again from 2026 🤣🤣🤣) and then close the chapter on Tofino - unfortunately too rainy for what this little coastal town probably has to offer. But we made the best of it 🙂
