Today we wake up to bright sunshine and clear skies, a day like we haven't had before.
And somehow we both immediately have the same thought, we want to go to the best snorkeling spot on the island, the so-called Captain Cook Bay. But there is no road to get here, not even a dirt road, you can only reach it by kayak or after a challenging hike. And since all kayak tours for today are already fully booked, we decide to do the hike. According to the internet, there are very mixed opinions about the difficulty level and duration, but we don't hesitate and just give it a try. Put on sneakers, pack snorkeling equipment in the backpack, and bring enough drinking water, that's the plan!
The first challenge: finding the starting point for the hike, because neither the internet nor the travel guide gives a clear address, but a friendly local helps us with that, who also offers kayak tours to the mentioned bay and whom we actually meet there later.
The hike first takes us through grass that has grown taller than ourselves and resembles reeds. But they provide shade, which is especially pleasant on the way back. After about halfway, we have a phenomenal view, but from here on, the trail is also in full sun. However, the descent is really manageable, even though we know what awaits us for the return trip...
After a good hour, we arrive at our destination and are thrilled. The snorkeling is truly unique, we can only agree: definitely the best snorkeling spot on the island. And it's a great feeling to have earned this experience ourselves and not just booked a tour with a boat in the midst of other tourists. So we linger for a while at this dreamlike spot and savor every second!
But eventually, of course, we have to start the return journey, which is uphill only and unfortunately we take a slight detour once because we miss the correct turn, but it doesn't matter, with these images in our minds, we can survive the 1.5 hours uphill in the scorching midday sun. And we are sure that on a -10 degree day in the German winter, we will soon look back on this day with nostalgia!
