Sao Pedro de Moel-Tomar

게시됨: 26.04.2024

Unfortunately, the weather has worsened. Rain is forecast, so we say goodbye to the sea for the time being and head inland.

Not far from our campsite in Marinha Grande, we want to visit the Royal Portuguese Glass Factory, founded by Guilherme Stephens in 1769. Before we enter the museum, we hear rhythmic drum beats - a demonstration by an entire school to mark April 25th passes us by.

The museum is located in the 18th century stately home where Stephens and the subsequent factory owners lived. The earthquake-proof construction of the house and the exhibited pieces and how they were made are vividly presented.

A few kilometers further on we want to visit the Castelo of Leiria. The parking lot we are heading for is unfortunately full because of a trade fair - but we are lucky and find enough space for our motorhome along an avenue. After construction began in 1135, the Castelo had to be recaptured from the Moors again and again, fell into disrepair and reconstruction only began at the end of the 19th century. An impressive building, to which a small "cog railway" - which we really appreciate - takes us up and down for free.

The largest monastery complex in the country is located in Batalha and is now a World Heritage Site. King João I kept his promise by building the monastery complex; construction of the monastery began after a victorious battle in 1388. A remarkable building!

The IC (comparable to a motorway) takes you directly to Tomar, where you park your car at the stadium and have dinner in the old town.
