I've never actually been there, but it was always a dream of mine. The untouched nature, the breathtaking wildlife..as a future (marine) biologist it's a paradise. The stunning Galápagos Islands are located in the Pacific Ocean around 1000km far away from Ecuador. The area is 3,040 sq mi big with 13 big and more than 100 tiny Islands. Last Summer (2019) my family and I tried to book a trip to the Islands for the Spring (2020) but Corona canceled everything. I really hope I can go there or at least work there in the future.
A perfect example of the unique species on the Islands is the Galápagos Tortoises. They've adjusted so much to their habitat, they've even adjusted their body to their diet. There are two kinds of these tortoises. One of them has long legs and a long neck with a bulge in their shell to reach leaves or fruits in the higher bushes or low trees. The other one has no bulge and not even a long neck or legs. They were made for munching grass or on the ground fallen fruits.
The most common and probably best-known animal is the Marine Iguana. It's the only existing Marine Lizard on earth. The probably most stunning fact about them is that their appearance changes on every Island. Therefore, every Island has their own Lizards. And that means, that there are over 100 different kinds of Marine Lizards. They can dive up to 30m (98ft) and stay around one hour underwater. Charles Darwin described them as 'hideous-looking' and 'most disgusting, clumsy lizards.'
Besides the stunning nature of the Islands, there are a lot of other fun activities to do. There are so many exciting tours to choose from. You can go and take a tour to the scary-looking Darwin and Wolf Islands or a tour to one of the hundred stunning nature reserves on the islands. For a quick Snack u can open a delicious Coconut fresh from a Coconut palm. You also can also rent a bike and ride from island to island and discover the breathtaking scenery from each Island. To dive with sharks in a coral reef could be fun - but only if you are not afraid of sharks of course. There are so many nice things to choose from. If diving with sharks is too scary for you, you could go snorkeling at a coral reef and search for shells and cute, but very picky, crabs that live in shells. A trip to the Galápagos Islands is fantastic. Definitely not the best choice for a city trip or partying, but perfect for hiking, discovering crazy-looking animals, gorgeous photos, and unforgettable memories with friends and/or family. It will always be a dream to me, hope it will come true one day.
