April 6, 2022: Mystras, Sparti

F. I always thought that going to Sparta must be really exciting because there are so many stories about the brave and proud Spartans. But if you go to Sparta, you will most likely just visit Mystras, which is only 5km away. There is much more to see here than in ancient Sparta, where only a few 2,500-year-old stones remain.

The castle at Mystras was built in the 13th century by the Frenchman Willhelm II, among others, using stones from ancient Sparta. This hilltop fortress was supposed to defend the areas conquered during the crusade. After several wars, the castle changed hands several times and was completely destroyed in the Greek War of Independence in 1825.

Today, there are still a few very interesting ruins to admire here. There are still the city walls with gates, old churches, and a monastery. The old palace is currently being rebuilt and was not accessible during our visit. Nevertheless, the castle complex offers a magnificent view of the whole region and it was simply a beautiful hike through all the old walls.
