In the morning, we explored Riga with the help of a local and extremely nice guide. Riga is very attractive, but different from Tallinn. Riga is world famous for its Art Nouveau buildings. Many of them have been beautifully renovated. The architecture enthusiasts among us were thrilled.
However, Riga's history dates back to the early Middle Ages, where once again Germans played a significant role. Some buildings, such as the cathedral, churches, city walls with defense towers, and guild houses, testify to this era.
Today is a holiday in Latvia. 30 years ago, the people of the Baltic states formed a human chain over 600 km long to demonstrate for independence. The President and various ministers passed by us in their carriages or on foot as they made their way to lay wreaths (with snipers on the roofs).
In the afternoon, we visited the market halls, which apparently are the largest in Europe. They are located in the hangars of a former German zeppelin airport. Fish dominates, especially in smoked form. But there are also many nice food stalls and bars.
In the evening, we will go back to the Old Town for dinner.
