Day 30 Cobbold Gorge & Sunset

Жарияланды: 16.07.2022

  • After a very cold night at the Cobbold Gorge village we were looking forward to the Cobbold Gorge tour, luckily not starting so early in the morning.
  • The tour starts with splitting the big group of people into smaller groups of about 10-15 and then a short drive with the bus over the Robertson River to the Gorge. The river itself is not visible as the water flows beneath the sand, so no river crossing with water.
  • From the bus shelter two groups went for the walk first and our group went for the boat trip through the Gorge first.
  • The boat trip is very quiet & relaxing - the Gorge itself is pretty narrow, so come close to the walls, see the different colours, spider webs etc. On the way into the gorge we also spotted two freshis, the baby one about 1,5 years old was relaxing in the sun on a small branch. The bigger freshi was in the grass lying in the sun. On our way back, this freshi jumped suddenly into the water before climbing back to the exact same spot as before.

  • Afterwards our group went on the walk through the Gorge including a glass bridge. On the walk our guide explained different fruits, leaves to use to have a mint water or to leaves to create soap with water in the bush. The information about the termite mounds and their role in the Australian ecosystem were really interesting for us, as we were always wondering why everywhere exist so many termite mounds in the middle of nowhere and termites are considered unwanted bugs back in Europe...

Back in the Cobbold Gorge village we decided to be brave and go for a short swim in the - unheated - infinite pool having a cocktail. What can I say, it was very, very cold...

A hot shower later and some work done we were preparing for our evening trip to the Quarz blow lookout for sunset. Stuart was also ready to go after having recovered from the cocktails the other night. The drive to the lookout is only about 15min via a small gravel road, but the biggest challenge is to look out for the wallabies. The sunset reveals a really colorful sky, which turns in the one hour or so after the sun has actually set into a dark red. So if you go to watch the sun set, stay for about one hour after the sun has set.

On the way back to the accommodation we met an unexpected other wildlife: a big frog just sitting in the light of the way.
