Amlou

In the region around Essaouria there are many argan trees, from whose fruits the high-quality argan oil is produced. Today we were allowed to visit a cooperation of 80 women to follow the elaborate process of producing argan oil. Peel fruits, crack nuts, roast seeds, grind seeds, knead ground seeds with water until the oil is released. In the shop, the ladies also sell their handmade products. I particularly liked Amlou, which is a Moroccan specialty made from ground almonds, argan oil, and honey. Amlou goes very well with breakfast bread with its especially nutty taste - I bought two jars for export to Switzerland.
