Now we have arrived at the top in Kerikeri in the Bay of Islands region. Since we are in the southern hemisphere, it's getting a little more pleasant temperature-wise heading north (around 20 degrees). Shorts weather!
We didn't have to drive as much as planned, so instead of the highway, we chose the detour via the old coastal road (turned out to be 300 km after all).
In the town of Kawakawa, we stopped to use the Hundertwasser toilet. He designed it himself (which was news to us) and as a tribute to his new home, he built a public restroom in his own style.
We visited the 'must see' attractions of Kerikeri (Stone Store - New Zealand's oldest stone house, Kemp - New Zealand's oldest house, and the Rainbow Falls) during a long walk in the afternoon.
We will be staying at the 'Stone Store Lodge' in Kerikeri for the next 3 days, very close to the historic (!) sights. Well, nothing is really old here...
