Day 285: Icelandic Theatre

Жарияланды: 08.05.2024

This evening we spontaneously went to the theater, half an hour away from the farm. The play, a comedy, was organized and performed by the theater association in this area. It is called "Með vífið í lúkunum" which translates as "With the wind in the hatches." The English title, however, is "Run for your wife," which is really very fitting.

Basically, it was about a man who married two different women and basically leads two lives side by side. But when he has an accident, the hospital informs both women and of course both of them want to know how he is doing. Then there are the two police officers who want to know which of the men with the same name is the one who had the accident and unfortunately for him, there is an article about the accident in the newspaper.

The stage was really cool. It was a living room, but one side was divided into green and the other into pink, so you could see the two different living rooms of the two women. It was really funny because when the man was with one woman, he was basically sitting on the sofa next to the other, making it clear to the audience that these were two different scenes.

Of course, I hardly understood a word, but there were also a few jokes that didn't require you to know any Icelandic. Ingveldur kept telling me what was going on.

What was funny was that at one point the guy made it clear to one of the police officers that he was gay and that he lived with his neighbor, who had always been with him and had his back every now and then, and that the woman he was actually married to was just the cleaning lady that he had just locked in the bedroom.

But things go pretty wrong when the cop, who thinks he's gay, meets his second wife and wants to make it clear that her husband is gay XD.

Then there was a painter who kept barging in and constantly picking on everyone, and it was a really funny break between all the arguments.

At the end there was quite a bit of chaos when both police officers suddenly showed up at the guy and his wife's house and then the second woman showed up too. Everyone was confused as to who had done what with whom and when XD. I had to have Ingveldur explain the ending to me. Apparently the guy admitted everything at the end, the women ran out angrily and the police officers fought with him. That was the end.

Ingveldur said that the actors had sometimes forgotten their lines and that was why it wasn't so fluent, but for obvious reasons I didn't get any of that. Although some of the jokes that Ingveldur translated for me were pretty homophobic. One or two of the jokes were a bit borderline, but since I didn't understand everything anyway...

In any case, I laughed a lot and interpreted most of it quite correctly even without translation.
