Originally, we wanted to study, but a weekend in Mérida is also perfect for a day trip. For example, to the flamingos and mangroves in Celestún - 1.5 hours north of Mérida.
After an exciting bus ride over rough terrain and from village to village, we looked for a lanchero (boat guide) at the entrance to the Celestún nature reserve to explore the flamingos and mangroves from his boat.
Flamingos in the wild are truly graceful animals. I could have spent the whole morning watching flamingos.
But there was more to come, to the mangroves, or rather into the mangroves. It is always impressive what nature has to offer here in Mexico!
After the boat tour, we made our way from the nature reserve to the fishing village without much expectation, solely with the goal of finding something edible for lunch. After just 100 meters, a car stopped next to us. As luck would have it, a very nice lecturer of mine was also in Celestún on the same day and recognized me. She took us to the village in her car, saving us a 30-minute walk in the blazing midday sun. But that's not all, she also gave us an absolute insider tip for very good and cheap food in a seemingly simple restaurant. When we arrived, we were speechless. We expected many things, but not a deserted dream beach straight out of a picture book.
And so, with a magnificent view and delicious food, we ended our trip before being able to ride back to Mérida with my lecturer (instead of on a stuffy bus). A completely successful Sunday outing!
