After almost 140 days with every day at least some sunshine, this day was our first without sun but lots of wind and some rain. To make it worse (or better?) we were booked for the day on a Rottnest Island trip with bikes rented to explore the island and find the famous Quokkas.
Early start in the morning, all layers of clothes available with/on us we were going on the first ferry of the day. After half an hour we arrived and saw the first Quokka - it was as sleepy as we were, which made us smile. First thing on the island was getting some coffee & breakfast in the bakery. The cinnamon rolls are highly recommend, you just have to make sure you get it and not all the Quokkas in the bakery area waiting eagerly for someone to drop a tiny piece.
On the way to pick up our bikes we saw another more curios Quokka as well as the first Quokka with a joey.
After picking up our bikes, we were heading around a part of the island in the hope to see some 'wilder' Quokkas. But with the unusual cold & windy weather all the Quokkas were hiding quite well. We only saw a couple of them in the dense bush running away. On the bright side, we saw some beautiful beaches to snorkel (on a sunny & warm day) and on the way walking up to Oliver Hill Battery an old train bringing passengers for the museum & tunnel tour up.
After some lunch in the settlement to refuel the body with energy to heat up, we walked around the settlement to watch & take photos of more Quokkas around. Luckily, we also found a Quokka mum with a joey in the pouch, looking around, having a snack, looking around again before hiding in the pouch and going to sleep.
