Geysir and Gullfoss

It's incredible - it doesn't get light until ten o'clock. So we have time and enjoy a hearty breakfast. The 'stuff' we bought yesterday has to be used up 😀

With the slow rising sun, we can see where we actually are. The cottage is located on a small hill, surrounded by barren landscape and a few other cottages - about 10. The sky is completely orange - what is that glowing in the distance???

Our first excursion today will take us to Iceland's most popular waterfall - Gullfoss - and to one of the geysers. Geysers are hot springs that are fed by groundwater and can spray water up to 30 meters high. The sources are 80 to 100 degrees hot 😳

We set off in our Land Rover and quickly realize that jeeps are appropriate here. The road is still icy in some places and some are only gravel. We see that we have only a mini version of a jeep at the first parking lot. It must be fun to cruise through the volcanic landscape with the monster trucks.

Arriving at Gullfoss, icy rain lashes into our faces. We are brave, pull our scarves higher, our hats lower, and march to the edge of the waterfall. The sight is gigantic - huge amounts of water plunge into the depths and fat ice walls form. However, we don't last long, it's really wet, we walk back, slip over the parking lot, and drive to the geyser. There we find funny bubbling holes in the ground from which steam rises - from the 80 to 100 degree hot water. And then we see the Stukkur - it shoots a water jet into the air every 10 minutes. That is a great spectacle - first a large blue bubble forms for a few seconds and then the water shoots up - as if the earth is spitting.

On the parking lot here we see new monster trucks - now we need a picture.

On the way back to the cottage we look for a supermarket - there is none 🤔 so we will celebrate the birthday today with tea and water 😀
