Today we started from home at 9.00 o'clock. First we take the highway towards Munich and then continue to Austria to the Danube in the Wachau. We have a relaxed drive because there is not too much traffic. So we already arrive at our guesthouse in Pöchlarn around 15.00 o'clock. The small village is only 9 km away from Melk, so we want to use the afternoon to explore the famous monastery town. We find a parking space directly below the rock on which Stift Melk was built and walk to the nearby market square. There our first way leads to a café to have an iced coffee at today's 30°C.
Then we stroll leisurely through the streets towards the entrance to the abbey. The impressive Benedictine abbey is part of the Unesco World Heritage and is one of the most beautiful Baroque ensembles in Europe. So it is worth a visit. We do not notice much tourist activity in Melk yet, there is still plenty of room for improvement. But that's fine with us.
It is already 16.30 o'clock when we stand in front of the entrance to the mighty monastery complex, so we only buy tickets for the visit of the park and the North Bastion. There we stroll around in a relaxed manner and enjoy the beautiful ambience, although dark storm clouds are already gathering on the horizon.
Just in time before the rain starts, we can reach our car and drive back to Pöchlarn. Around 19.00 o'clock we sit near our guesthouse in a pizzeria, then the heavy rain of the thunderstorm unleashes and brings an evening cooling.
Unfortunately, an evening stroll along the Danube has to be cancelled, but at least we had a very nice afternoon.
