Dunedin

Diterbitake: 11.03.2017

24.01. - 26.01.2017

We spent three days in and around Dunedin, one of the oldest cities in New Zealand. This is where the first Scottish settlers landed, and you can still see the Scottish influence in many buildings. After a city tour, we visited the Botanic Gardens, got an overview of the city from a viewpoint, and visited the steepest street in the world (35% incline).

In the evening, there was a small backpackers' soccer game at our campground. The next few nights, we made friends with two Israelis who were also participating in the tournament.

The next day, we explored the Otago Peninsula, which is southeast of Dunedin and is a paradise for animal and nature lovers. There is the only mainland breeding colony of the Royal Albatross, as well as penguins and sea lions. We explored Sandfly Bay and Victoria Beach and went on a few hikes.

On Thursday, we visited the free Otago Museum and the Tunnel Beach. It's more of a coastal landscape with beautiful sandstone cliffs and turquoise water. You can access it through a hand-cut tunnel, hence the name.

Since our free campground only has toilets and no showers, we have to look for alternatives. The sea is not an option due to the cold and lack of organic shampoo, so we visit the swimming pool in Dunedin. For $4 admission, you get unlimited access to 12 swimming lanes, diving boards, slides, and the wellness area. :D
