Český Krumlov

Diterbitake: 16.06.2017

I had neither planned nor been on my way to Krumau an der Moldau. However, during my stay at the Lipno reservoir, I came across references to this city nearby several times. After a short research and the information that the old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it was clear that I would make a detour here. When I set off towards the historic old town on Wednesday afternoon (14.06.2017), my expectations were accordingly high.

I was not disappointed, quite the opposite! I approached the old town from the left side of the Moldau River, where my path led me past the synagogue and into the city park. A very beautifully designed green area that appears very spacious due to its planting and yet offers many quiet, seemingly secluded places to relax. On the other side of the Moldau River, there are magnificent waterfront properties, certainly upper-class real estate (unless there is a flood). The next Moldau bend slowly reveals a view of the castle, which towers above the city on the left bank. The Mantel Bridge becomes more impressive the closer you get and its dimensions become clear. After a tour of the castle grounds (with an area of 10 hectares, the second largest in the Czech Republic, after Prague Castle), it's time for a beer at Eggenbergs. The brewery in the Latrán district has an almost 500-year-old brewing tradition.

I continue along the Moldau River until I have almost circled the old town after the third river bend. It's time to change sides and squeeze through the historic walls. There are many narrow streets to explore and a variety of beautiful medieval houses to admire. Unfortunately, the high number of visitors somewhat overshadows the town's flair (at least on the main paths and squares). Nevertheless, this place is always worth a visit. After a few hours and a good 12 kilometers along impressive scenery, I'm back at the tent. The Dicke has guarded it safely as always and is delighted as a snow king when I return. There is something to eat...
