05+06.01.2019 - In the Canyon and doing nothing

Diterbitake: 07.01.2019

After an early wake-up and a quick breakfast, Alex the guide drove us to the canyon in a 4x4 SUV. The drive there and back was about 55 km on extremely adventurous roads. Thanks to the vehicle and the skilled driver, everything went smoothly and it took a total of 8 hours...

We saw magnificent views, adventurous roads with steep inclines or descents of about 40%. The most adventurous part was the so-called Terror Pass, which can only be navigated at a very slow speed.

You have to pass it to reach the RockPool, a pool with remaining water from the Fish River, where us Greeks refrained from swimming due to the fish and the stagnant water, and instead chose to talk with the two older Germans who were also not interested in the "pool" about their glider activities here. They only need 4 liters of aviation fuel to climb to about 1000 m and then stay in the air for up to 8 hours... When I heard about this, the first thing that came to my mind was that they must have iron bladders...

On the way back, we had a small picnic by the pool and enjoyed the excellent food...

The next day was rather uneventful, we did the things that many people claim I cannot do... simply lying around, eating, drinking coffee. We watched the people by the pool in the scorching heat of 36 degrees...

Then in the evening, we joined a sundowner tour. It was super cheesy and very touristy, but it was more than worth it. The view at sunset was amazing, and we had a great sundowner followed by an excellent dinner, a fantastic kudu steak, which is a type of wild game. Marina always gets a vegetarian dish prepared for her, which always looks and tastes very good, but Namibia is definitely a country for meat lovers, especially since they have only top-quality organic meat here.
