Sightseeing in Accra

Diterbitake: 08.04.2018

In the afternoon, 4 students from our group walked through the city with Kofi and he showed us the most important sights. Starting in Jamestown at the Lighthouse, where the slums are. I have already reported on it, but this time I saw everything up close. However, the children are so cute! They came running up to us, took our hands and showed us around their home. Children play soccer everywhere, whether in the middle of the street or between their houses. It's nice to see that despite poverty, they never lose their joy!

We continued to "New York" (a lot of people, always chaotic), to Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park (where the former President of Ghana is buried), and finally to Independence Square. Kofi was able to tell us a lot about the history of Ghana and it was very exciting! The taxi ride home was a bit adventurous: squished with 6 people, so four in the back of the taxi, we drove for over 45 minutes. Even when the police saw it, we didn't get into trouble. I guess it's common here, as we did the same thing an hour later to get to the restaurant. Since we had quite a few students because of the outreach in the morning, we went to an Indian restaurant in the tourist district of Osu (Oxford Street). We paid about 60 Cedi for dinner (= 12€), which is very expensive for Ghana! Normally, you pay about 10 Cedi (= 2€) for a good meal. Afterwards, we went to a bar and at 3 o'clock in the morning, exhausted from a tiring but successful day, we fell into bed!
